Convention of Tientsin
Tianjin, China
What happened
Itō Hirobumi for Japan and Li Hongzhang for China signed the convention. Both China and Japan had sent troops to Korea after a failed coup there in 1884. In Tianjin they agreed to pull their forces out within four months. Neither would send troops to Korea again without telling the other first.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It ended China's claim to be the only outside power in Korea. Korea became, in effect, a shared protectorate of both.
What came next
The rivalry was not settled, and a later crisis in Korea led to the First Sino-Japanese War.
Did you know?
