Convention of Klosterzeven
Zeven, Lower Saxony, Germany
What happened
After the French won the Battle of Hastenbeck and occupied Hanover, Cumberland's army was in a weak position. At the former convent of Zeven he agreed to a ceasefire and to send home his allied troops, while the Hanoverian army moved across the Elbe.
Why it matters
It took Hanover out of the war for a time. Cumberland's military career ended in disgrace when he returned to Britain.
What came next
After Prussia's victory at Rossbach, King George II rejected the convention. Hanover rejoined the war under Ferdinand of Brunswick.
Did you know?
Zeven's convent had been there since 1141.
