Burney Treaty
Bangkok, Thailand
What happened
Henry Burney for the British East India Company and King Rama III of Siam signed the treaty. Britain and Siam were neighbours in the Malay Peninsula. At Bangkok they agreed that Siam had claims over the northern Malay states, while Britain kept Penang. British merchants could trade in Kelantan and Terengganu.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It set the terms of relations between Britain and Siam for decades. The Malay states were not represented in the talks.
What came next
The Bowring Treaty of 1855 widened trade, and the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty replaced the arrangement over the Malay states.
Did you know?
Siam had agreed to help Britain against Burma, but took no serious part in the war.
