Battles of Krithia

Alçıtepe (Krithia), Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey

What happened

After landing at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915, Allied troops tried again and again to capture the village of Krithia. There were attacks on 28 April, 6–8 May, 4 June and in August. Each time the Ottoman defenders held, and the village was never reached.

Why it matters

The Ottoman defenders turned back every assault over four months. The battles were part of the Gallipoli campaign, which the Allies later abandoned.

What came next

The Allies left the Gallipoli Peninsula in January 1916.

Did you know?

Krithia is now called Alçıtepe, and its two Greek churches were destroyed by shelling during the fighting.
