Battle of Yenidje
Giannitsa (Yenidje), Greece
What happened
The Greek army attacked the Ottoman position at Yenidje, the last line of defence before Thessaloniki. Swampy ground made Greek artillery fire inaccurate. On the second morning, an Evzone battalion captured an Ottoman battery, and the Ottoman defenders were soon in retreat.
Why it matters
The victory opened the way to Thessaloniki, which became part of Greece. Greece's capture of the city also caused friction with Bulgaria, which helped lead to the Second Balkan War.
What came next
Hasan Tahsin Pasha surrendered Thessaloniki and its garrison to the Greeks.
