Battle of Würzburg
Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany
What happened
Jourdan advanced expecting to attack a single Austrian division. Morning mist let Charles bring up more troops unseen, and as further Austrian divisions arrived the French were driven from the field. Jourdan withdrew west toward the Rhine.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It decided the 1796 campaign in southern Germany, keeping Jourdan's army apart from Moreau's.
What came next
The Austrians won again at Limburg in September, and Moreau retreated through the Black Forest.
Did you know?
The page says Austria's refusal of a later French offer of an armistice was 'a huge error'.
