Battle of Wörgl
Wörgl, Tyrol, Austria
What happened
In 1809 the people of Tyrol rose up against Bavarian rule, helped by Austrian troops. The Bavarians attacked Chasteler's force in a series of fights at Wörgl, Söll and Rattenberg, and the Austrians retreated up the Inn valley.
Why it matters
It drove Austria's regular troops out of Tyrol and let the Bavarians briefly retake Innsbruck. But the Tyrolean uprising went on.
What came next
The uprising, led by Andreas Hofer, flared up again in summer and was finally put down after the fourth battle of Bergisel on 1 November 1809.
Did you know?
On the same day, Tyrolean fighters at Innsbruck forced thousands of Bavarian soldiers to surrender.
