Battle of Wolgast
Wolgast, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
What happened
Imperial troops under Albrecht von Wallenstein attacked a Danish–Norwegian force under King Christian IV. Christian landed on the island of Usedom and took the town of Wolgast, then camped just west of it. Wallenstein attacked, overran the Danish flank and retook the town. Christian withdrew to his ships under cover of night.
Why it matters
It ended Christian's boldest sea-borne attack. It was the main reason he agreed to make peace at Lübeck.
What came next
Under the Treaty of Lübeck, Christian got his lands back but promised to stay out of the Empire. In 1630 the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus landed at the same spot.
Did you know?
It was the last battle between Christian IV and the Holy Roman Empire.
