Battle of Winceby

Winceby, Lincolnshire, England, UK

What happened

A Royalist force marching to relieve Bolingbroke Castle met Parliamentarian cavalry at Winceby. Cromwell pretended to retreat to draw the Royalists onto open ground, then charged. Fairfax struck the Royalist side, an order to turn was mistaken for retreat, and the Royalists fled.

Why it matters

Lincolnshire, almost entirely Royalist before, came under Parliament's control.

What came next

The Royalist siege of Hull was abandoned the next day, and Bolingbroke Castle surrendered on 14 November.

Did you know?

Cromwell's horse was shot from under him during the charge, but he got another and rejoined the fight.
