What happened
Napoleon's army was crossing the Danube behind the Austrian army at Ulm. Murat and Lannes caught Auffenberg's corps by surprise near Wertingen, and many Austrians were captured.
Why it matters
It was the first battle of the Ulm Campaign. The French were cutting the Austrians at Ulm off from Vienna.
What came next
The surviving Austrians fell back toward Ulm. More fighting followed at Günzburg and Haslach-Jungingen.
Did you know?
One historian said it was unclear why the Austrian commander had sent such a small force to such an isolated place.
