Battle of Usagre

Usagre, Extremadura, Spain

What happened

A week after Albuera, French cavalry was sent to find the Allied army. Lumley hid most of his cavalry behind a ridge near Usagre. When French dragoons crossed the bridge, he attacked, and the French were pushed back onto the bridge, where their retreat was blocked.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It was a clear Allied cavalry victory, with far fewer Allied than French losses. The French scouting mission failed.

What came next

The war in the south continued; the French later fought the Spanish at Saguntum in October 1811.

Did you know?

Lumley let the French cross the river before attacking, so the narrow bridge trapped them.
