Battle of Urica
Urica, Anzoátegui, Venezuela
What happened
Republican forces under José Félix Ribas and José Francisco Bermúdez fought royalist forces under José Tomás Boves. Boves's column was pushed back at first, then surrounded. Boves led a cavalry charge to break out and was killed. The other royalist columns then surrounded the republicans, and both sides lost heavily.
Why it matters
The royalists won, but they lost their leader. Over time the llaneros, the plains horsemen Boves had led, joined the republican side under José Antonio Páez.
What came next
Francisco Tomás Morales took command of the royalist forces.
Did you know?
The royalists won the battle even though their commander was killed.
