Battle of Tweebosch
Tweebosch, Western Transvaal, South Africa
What happened
De la Rey's men attacked Methuen's column on the Little Harts River. Many of the British troops were inexperienced, and most gave up quickly. Methuen was wounded and captured, the only British general the Boers captured in the war.
Why it matters
It knocked out the largest British force in the Western Transvaal and gave the Boers hope of an honourable end to the war.
What came next
De la Rey sent the wounded Methuen to a British hospital under a flag of truce. Peace talks began in April, and the war ended on 31 May 1902.
Did you know?
De la Rey took Methuen to hospital in his own carriage.
