Battle of Tuttlingen
Tuttlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
What happened
Bavarian, Imperial, Spanish and Lorraine troops under Franz von Mercy surprised a French army under Josias Rantzau. Mercy's army attacked through heavy snow. Johann von Werth's cavalry overran the French at Möhringen and captured their guns. The next day the French infantry at Tuttlingen and Möhringen surrendered, along with Rantzau himself.
Why it matters
It wiped out French gains in Germany since 1638 and pushed them back to where they had been five years earlier.
What came next
The French garrison at Rottweil surrendered a week later. The French court kept news of the defeat quiet.
