Battle of Turnham Green

Chiswick, west London, England, UK

What happened

Marching on London, the Royalists found their way blocked at Turnham Green, west of the city. Outnumbered and short of ammunition, they did not attack. After a brief exchange of cannon fire, the King withdrew.

Why it matters

London was saved for Parliament, and the Royalists never came so close to taking it again. Without London, they could not win the war.

What came next

Charles retreated to Oxford, which became his headquarters for the rest of the war.

Did you know?

The battlefield is now part of Chiswick, and Chiswick High Road still follows almost the same route.
