Battle of Trevilian Station
Trevilians, Louisa County, Virginia, USA
What happened
Sheridan led a cavalry raid to damage the Virginia Central Railroad. Hampton's cavalry reached Trevilian Station first, and the first day ended in a stalemate after George A. Custer's men were surrounded and fought their way out. On the second day Union attacks were driven back, and Sheridan withdrew.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was the largest all-cavalry battle of the war and a Confederate victory. The raid may have helped hide Grant's crossing of the James River.
What came next
The railway was repaired within about two weeks. Sheridan rejoined the main Union army.
