Battle of Trautenau
Trutnov (Trautenau), Czech Republic
What happened
Prussian troops coming out of the Giant Mountains met Austrian forces near Trautenau. Austrian brigades arrived one by one and made attacks that were not well linked, while Prussian units held their ground. In the end the Austrians won, but at a very high cost.
Why it matters
It was the only battle of the war that ended in an Austrian victory. Even so, Gablenz soon had to retreat because Prussian troops had broken through at Náchod and were threatening his sides.
What came next
Gablenz withdrew the next day, and a week later Prussia won the decisive Battle of Königgrätz.
Did you know?
When Gablenz died in 1874, he was buried beneath the monument to the battle he had won.
