Battle of Tippermuir
Tippermuir, near Perth, Scotland, UK
What happened
The armies met on flat ground about three miles outside Perth. Mac Colla's Irish troops charged in the centre, and the government's mostly untrained militia broke. Montrose's Atholl men attacked the government left, and the government army was routed.
Why it matters
It revived the Royalist cause in Scotland and kept Scottish government forces busy at home instead of helping the English Parliament.
What came next
Perth surrendered at once but was sacked for two days by the victorious Royalist troops, and Montrose went on to win again at Aberdeen and later at Inverlochy, Auldearn and Alford.
Did you know?
It is said to be the last battle in which the English longbow was used.
