Battle of the Sabis
Near the Sambre or Selle River, northern France
What happened
Julius Caesar's Roman army fought the Nervii and their Belgic allies, led by Boduognatus. During Caesar's conquest of Gaul, the Nervii hid in woods above a river and attacked as the Romans were building their camp. The Roman line was split, and Caesar rallied his troops in person. His officer Labienus brought a legion back across the river to attack from behind, and the Nervii were defeated.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was one of the hardest fights of Caesar's Gallic Wars. Caesar praised the Nervii as 'heroes' and spared the survivors.
