Battle of the Drina
Drina River, near Loznica, Serbia
What happened
In a second invasion of Serbia, Austro-Hungarian armies crossed the Drina River. One army was driven back, but another kept a foothold on the Serbian side. After heavy fighting, including four days at Mačkov Kamen, the front settled into trench warfare.
Why it matters
Serbia stopped the second invasion, but the Austro-Hungarian foothold became the starting point for a third offensive.
What came next
Months of trench fighting followed, in which Serbia was short of heavy guns and shells.
Did you know?
Many Serbian soldiers wore traditional leather peasant shoes called opanaks.
