Battle of Stockach (1799)

Stockach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

What happened

The two armies fought for control of the Hegau region near Lake Constance. French attacks struck the Austrian right and centre, and a small French corps attacked from behind. Archduke Charles brought up his reserves himself, the French attacks stalled, and the French withdrew.

Why it matters

Why it matters: Most historians count it as an Austrian victory, though both sides claimed to have won. It ended the French push into south-western Germany for that campaign.

What came next

The French fell back toward the Rhine and the Black Forest, and Jourdan resigned in April. The armies fought at Stockach again in 1800.

Did you know?

Jourdan later insisted the French had won, but most historians disagree.
