Battle of Spring Hill

Spring Hill, Tennessee, USA

What happened

A Confederate army under John Bell Hood attacked Union troops under John M. Schofield. Schofield's Union army was retreating north through Spring Hill. Hood's army attacked, but Confederate command mix-ups kept it from doing much harm, and Schofield's troops slipped past in the night toward Franklin.

Why it matters

It is often called Hood's best chance to cut off and beat the Union army. One historian thinks its importance has been exaggerated.

What came next

The next day Hood attacked the Union army at Franklin.
