Battle of Soor
Hajnice (Soor), Czech Republic
What happened
Frederick the Great's Prussian army fought an Austrian and Saxon army under Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine. In the Second Silesian War, the much larger Austrian-Saxon army tried to surprise Frederick's camp. At first the Prussians were pushed back, but a second attack took the key hill. A charge led by Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick captured an Austrian battery, and the Austrian line gave way.
Why it matters
It was a Prussian victory over a larger army. Afterwards the Prussians went into winter quarters in Upper Silesia because their supplies had run out.
What came next
Prussian forces won again at Kesselsdorf on 15 December 1745, and the Treaty of Dresden ended the war on 25 December.
Did you know?
Frederick had been planning to go back to Berlin to check on his new palace, Sans Souci.
