Battle of Sheriffmuir
Sheriffmuir, Scotland, UK
What happened
Argyll's right wing pushed back the Highlanders, while his left wing was overpowered by a larger force. By evening both armies were badly reduced. Mar did not risk his whole army, so Argyll was able to withdraw.
Why it matters
The battle was a draw and both sides claimed victory, but Argyll stopped the Jacobite advance. The result discouraged the Jacobites, and their foreign supporters pulled back.
What came next
The Old Pretender landed in Scotland in December, but the rising was largely lost, and he soon returned to France.
Did you know?
Robert Burns wrote a song about two shepherds who cannot agree on who won.
