Battle of Schöngrabern
Schöngrabern, Hollabrunn, Austria
What happened
Kutuzov's Russian army was retreating north. Bagration's rearguard took a hill above Schöngrabern, and Murat, thinking he faced the whole Russian army, agreed to armistice talks. Napoleon was furious, the fighting resumed, and Bagration held his position for about six hours before withdrawing in good order.
Why it matters
Why it matters: The French won the field, but Bagration's stand delayed them long enough for the two Russian armies to join up at Brno.
What came next
About two weeks later the united Russian and Austrian armies fought Napoleon at Austerlitz.
