Battle of Schliengen

Schliengen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

What happened

After their defeat at Emmendingen, Moreau's French troops kept retreating south through the Black Forest. The Austrians caught up with them at Schliengen, near the Rhine, and won again.

Why it matters

It was one step in an autumn when the Austrians pushed the over-stretched French armies back across the Rhine.

What came next

The Austrians then besieged the Rhine crossings at Kehl and Hüningen through the winter.

Did you know?

Before the campaign, a local militia of about 7,000 farm hands and day labourers had been raised to help defend the Rhine.
