Battle of Sarantaporo
Sarantaporo pass, Greece
What happened
Greek infantry attacked the Ottoman line in the Sarantaporo pass, the pass connecting Thessaly with central Macedonia. While the main force advanced into the pass, other units broke through on the sides. Fearing they would be surrounded, the Ottomans withdrew during the night.
Why it matters
The pass's defences had been thought almost impossible to break. Taking it opened the way to Servia and Kozani.
What came next
Greek cavalry entered Kozani on 11 October, and the army moved on toward Thessaloniki.
Did you know?
A Prussian field marshal had called the pass 'the graveyard of the Greek Army', yet the Greeks broke through in about two days.
