Battle of Sarandí
Arroyo Sarandí, Florida Department, Uruguay
What happened
Forces of the Banda Oriental (today's Uruguay) under Juan Antonio Lavalleja fought Brazilian troops under Colonel Bento Manuel Ribeiro. In 1825 Lavalleja and his followers rose against Brazilian rule of the Banda Oriental. At the Sarandí creek, a Brazilian charge broke into the Oriental centre. Lavalleja sent in his reserves, split the Brazilian line, and his cavalry chased the scattered Brazilians.
