Battle of Saint-Cast
Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, Brittany, France
What happened
The British had landed on the coast of Brittany to raid Saint-Malo. They were getting back onto their ships at Saint-Cast when a larger French force arrived. The British rearguard held for a while but then broke, and many soldiers were captured.
Why it matters
It was the last big British landing on the French coast in the war. It helped persuade Prime Minister Pitt to send troops to Germany instead.
What came next
Britain stopped raiding France's coast and sent its main effort to fight alongside Ferdinand of Brunswick in Germany.
