Battle of Sacile

Sacile, Friuli, Italy

What happened

Austria invaded Venetia in April 1809, and its advance guard beat the French rear guard at Pordenone. The next day Eugène attacked east of Sacile, believing he had more troops. The Austrians had about twice as much cavalry, the Franco-Italian attack stalled, and Eugène withdrew.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It was an Austrian victory, called the most notable of Archduke John's career.
