Battle of Rymnik

Râmnicu Sărat, Buzău, Romania

What happened

Russian and Austrian troops under Alexander Suvorov and Prince Josias of Coburg fought a much larger Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Cenaze Hasan Pasha. The Ottomans marched at night to attack the Austrians. The Austrians held on, and Suvorov's Russians arrived the evening before battle. Suvorov struck the Ottoman left across rough ground while the Austrians took the main attack, and then the allies advanced together and the Ottoman army broke.

Why it matters

It is counted among Suvorov's greatest victories. Together with Focșani, it made him Russia's leading general.

What came next

Catherine the Great made Suvorov 'Count of Rymnik', and Austrian troops occupied Wallachia until the end of the war.

Did you know?

Told the Ottomans were coming, Suvorov sent back a short reply: 'Coming, Suvorov.'
