Battle of Rocquencourt

Rocquencourt, near Versailles, France

What happened

After Waterloo, the Prussians were closing in on Paris. Sohr's hussars rode far ahead of the main army and ran into a bigger French force waiting near Rocquencourt. They fell back toward Versailles and tried to break out, but many were captured.

Why it matters

It was one of the last French wins of the Napoleonic Wars. A historian questioned whether the Prussians should have sent a brigade so far ahead.

What came next

That evening Prussian troops retook Rocquencourt. The next fight was at Issy, on the edge of Paris.

Did you know?

A Prussian officer grabbed a bridge over the Seine just as the French were about to blow it up.
