Battle of Rincón
Rincón del Haedo, Río Negro, Uruguay
What happened
Rebels from the Banda Oriental under Fructuoso Rivera fought Brazilian troops under Jerônimo Jardim and Mena Barreto. Rivera's men crossed the Negro River and surprised the guards at the only land entrance to the Rincón, where the Brazilians kept about 8,000 horses. As the rebels drove the horses out, two Brazilian columns approached. Rivera attacked them one at a time and defeated both.
Why it matters
It was the first fight between Rivera's rebels and Brazilian forces in the Cisplatine War. Afterwards the Brazilians left the eastern shore of the Uruguay River and the city of Mercedes.
What came next
Brazil declared war on the United Provinces on 10 December 1825. The war ended in 1828 with the Treaty of Montevideo, which recognised the independent Eastern Republic of Uruguay.
Did you know?
The real prize was the horses, which the rebels took to their leaders' headquarters at Durazno.
