Battle of Radzymin (1809)
Radzymin, Masovia, Poland
What happened
After the Austrians took Warsaw, the Polish army moved to the east bank of the Vistula. Overnight the Poles crossed the Narew and reached Radzymin before dawn. They attacked from two sides, cut off two Austrian battalions, and those battalions surrendered.
Why it matters
It was one of several Austrian setbacks east of the Vistula. Soon the Austrian garrison in Warsaw was trapped.
What came next
The Austrians were beaten again at Ostrówek in early May, and the Poles went on to free much of Galicia.
Did you know?
On the same day, Polish troops from Modlin also beat the Austrians besieging Praga.
