Battle of Raab

Győr (Raab), Hungary

What happened

The two armies fought outside the town of Győr, which Germans called Raab. A farm in the centre changed hands five times. When French cavalry threatened his flank, John retreated into the fortress and then away to the north-east.

Why it matters

It kept Archduke John from bringing many troops to the Battle of Wagram, while Eugène's army reached Napoleon in time. Napoleon called it 'a granddaughter of Marengo and Friedland', because it fell on their anniversary.

What came next

The fortress of Győr surrendered on 22 June. John reached Wagram too late to make a difference.

Did you know?

The Kis-Megyer farm in the middle of the battlefield changed hands five times.
