Battle of Preston (1715)
Preston, Lancashire, England, UK
What happened
The Jacobites marched into Preston on 9 November. Forster gave up a strong position at the Ribble bridge and fought from barricaded streets instead. When Carpenter's troops arrived and cut off escape, Forster surrendered on 14 November.
Why it matters
About 1,468 Jacobites were taken prisoner, and the rising in England collapsed. It is often called the last battle fought on English soil, though that depends on how a battle is defined.
What came next
Most surviving prisoners were pardoned by the Indemnity Act 1717.
Did you know?
Two Jacobite earls sentenced to death, Winton and Nithsdale, escaped from the Tower of London.
