Battle of Pozzolo

Pozzolo, Mincio River, Lombardy, Italy

What happened

A French army under Guillaume Brune fought an Austrian army under Heinrich von Bellegarde. Bellegarde had gathered his army on the Mincio River but put off his attack after hearing of the Austrian defeat at Hohenlinden. Brune attacked first. The village of Pozzolo changed hands several times, and the next day the French crossed the river under fog and drove the Austrians back.

Why it matters

The defeat pushed Austria toward peace and effectively ended its part in the war.
