Battle of Pickett's Mill
Pickett's Mill, Paulding County, Georgia, USA
What happened
During the Atlanta campaign, Union troops tried to go around the end of the Confederate line. Cleburne's men held their ground, and a Union brigade attacking on its own had to fall back. A later attack also failed.
Why it matters
Along with New Hope Church, it was one of Johnston's defensive victories. These wins lifted Confederate spirits after weeks of retreat.
What came next
The armies faced each other near Dallas until Sherman moved toward the railroad, and Johnston fell back on 4 June.
Did you know?
The writer Ambrose Bierce was a Union mapmaker here and later wrote 'The Crime at Pickett's Mill.'
