Battle of Ostrołęka (1807)

Ostrołęka, Masovia, Poland

What happened

Savary learned the Russian plan by capturing an officer carrying a report. The Russians attacked along the Narew River and into the town of Ostrołęka itself. The French held the town, counterattacked, and by evening the Russians withdrew.

Why it matters

It showed Napoleon that the Russians were weak on this side of the front. He had little reason to fear for his supply line to Warsaw.

What came next

Both armies then went into winter quarters because of the weather.

Did you know?

Ostrołęka's name is carved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
