Battle of Orewin Bridge

Cilmeri, near Builth Wells, Wales, UK

What happened

Llywelyn moved south into Builth, where an English force was waiting. Accounts disagree: one describes an ambush at a bridge and ford, another a large battle. Llywelyn was killed, and his army was defeated.

Why it matters

It was a decisive Welsh defeat. Welsh resistance to Edward I collapsed soon after.

What came next

Llywelyn's brother Dafydd fought on until he was captured in June 1283, and Edward I then fortified and annexed Wales.

Did you know?

A mural of Llywelyn is painted in the centre of nearby Builth Wells.
