Battle of Old Byland

Scawton Moor, North Yorkshire, England, UK

What happened

The English held high ground on Scawton Moor. Scots attacked uphill while Highlanders climbed the cliffs and struck the English side and rear. The English line collapsed, and the Earl of Richmond was captured.

Why it matters

It was the most important Scottish victory since Bannockburn. It humiliated Edward II, who fled nearby Rievaulx Abbey leaving his belongings behind.

What came next

Five years later the Scots beat Edward III at Stanhope Park.
