Battle of Neumarkt-Sankt Veit
Neumarkt-Sankt Veit, Bavaria, Germany
What happened
Hiller turned and attacked the French and Bavarians who were following him. The Bavarians held until about noon, then Bessières ordered a retreat, and the Austrians took Neumarkt in the afternoon.
Why it matters
It was an Austrian win inside a campaign Napoleon was winning. Hiller did not know that Archduke Charles's main army had already been beaten.
What came next
Learning of Charles's defeat, Hiller retreated toward Linz and Vienna. The French caught up with him at Ebelsberg on 3 May.
Did you know?
Bessières pulled back in good order to Vilsbiburg.
