Battle of Neresheim

Neresheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

What happened

Archduke Charles attacked to cover his army's crossing of the Danube. Heavy rain slowed his columns, and fighting broke out around several villages. The battle became a stalemate and an exchange of artillery fire, and the Austrians withdrew and crossed the Danube.

Why it matters

Why it matters: Sources disagree whether it was a French victory or a draw. Moreau did not pursue, which let Charles move his forces to face the other French army under Jourdan.

What came next

On 24 August Charles beat Jourdan at Amberg.

Did you know?

Moreau removed a division commander after the battle but was persuaded to take him back a few days later.
