Battle of Mudki
Mudki, Punjab, India
What happened
An East India Company army under Sir Hugh Gough, with Governor-General Sir Henry Hardinge, fought part of the Sikh Khalsa Army under Lal Singh. The British army reached Mudki in the afternoon, and a Sikh advance force attacked. Much of the fighting happened in darkness and smoke, and the British lines lost their order. After about two hours the Sikh troops were driven from the field.
Why it matters
It was a British victory in the First Anglo-Sikh War, though it decided little on its own. That war ended with the Sikh Empire giving up large lands to the East India Company.
What came next
The armies fought again at Ferozeshah three days later. After Aliwal and Sobraon, the war ended with the Treaty of Lahore on 9 March 1846.
Did you know?
It is nicknamed 'Midnight Mudki' because most of it was fought at night.
