Battle of Montiel
Montiel, Castile-La Mancha, Spain
What happened
In Castile's civil war, Peter had lost the Black Prince's support. Defeated, he retreated to the castle of Montiel and was trapped. He tried to bribe du Guesclin, but was lured out of the castle and killed by his half-brother Henry.
Why it matters
Peter's death ended the Castilian Civil War, and Henry became King Henry II of Castile. Castile then allied with France.
What came next
From 1370 to 1376 the Castilian fleet supported French campaigns against the English.
Did you know?
The Black Prince had fought in Castile as Prince of Aquitaine rather than for England, to avoid breaking the Treaty of Brétigny.
