Battles of Monte Grappa
Monte Grappa, Veneto, Italy
What happened
After the Austro-Hungarian and German breakthrough of autumn 1917, Austro-Hungarian and German troops tried to capture the summit of Monte Grappa in late 1917 but failed. They tried again in June 1918. In the final Italian offensive of autumn 1918, the Austro-Hungarians on the mountain began a general retreat on 28 October.
Why it matters
Holding Monte Grappa stopped the enemy advance that followed the 1917 autumn offensive and kept the Piave front steady. Austrian troops could see Venice but never reached it.
What came next
Fighting on the Italian front ended with the Armistice of Villa Giusti, signed on 3 November 1918.
Did you know?
Romanian volunteers of the Romanian Legion also fought on the Italian side here.
