Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle
Mons-en-Pévèle, Nord, France
What happened
After a day of indecisive fighting, the Flemish made a surprise frontal attack that reached the French king's tent. Philip escaped and led a counterattack. The Flemish then withdrew to Lille, and both sides claimed victory.
Why it matters
Philip wanted revenge for the French defeat at the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. The French held the field but were too drained to gain much.
What came next
The Treaty of Athis-sur-Orge in 1305 gave Lille, Douai and Orchies to the French crown, while Flanders kept its own count.
Did you know?
The French royal banner, the oriflamme, was lost in the Flemish attack.
