Battle of Mohrungen
Morąg (Mohrungen), Poland
What happened
Bennigsen's Russian army had begun a winter offensive into East Prussia. Bernadotte attacked Markov's advance guard near Mohrungen and pushed it back. At nightfall, Russian cavalry got into Mohrungen from the other side and captured supplies, but they withdrew when Bernadotte returned.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It was a French victory that helped blunt the Russian winter offensive.
What came next
Bernadotte pulled back the next day. Napoleon counterattacked on 1 February, and the armies fought the Battle of Eylau on 7–8 February.
Did you know?
A claim that silver and gold taken from the town of Elbing were found in Bernadotte's captured baggage was never proven.
