Second Battle of Mohács

Nagyharsány, Baranya, Hungary

What happened

Imperial forces under Charles of Lorraine, with Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria and Eugene of Savoy, fought an Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Sarı Süleyman Paşa. The Ottomans attacked the Habsburg army near Nagyharsány while part of it was marching through a forest. The Imperial infantry held, the cavalry counter-attacked, and a large Habsburg counter-attack broke the Ottoman lines.

Why it matters

It reversed the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526. It opened the way for the Habsburgs to retake most of Hungary.

What came next

The Ottoman army mutinied, Sultan Mehmed IV was deposed, and Archduke Joseph was crowned the first hereditary King of Hungary.

Did you know?

The Elector of Bavaria's share of the captured treasure was said to be worth over two million gold ducats.
