Battle of Magnano

Magnano, near Verona, Italy

What happened

Both armies advanced at the same time and met on rain-soaked ground south of Verona. Schérer spread his attacks over a wide front without keeping troops in reserve. Kray sent his reserve against the French right, opened a gap in the French line, and the French were driven back.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It was an Austrian victory at the start of the 1799 campaign that drove the French out of most of Italy. Kray was promoted for it.

What came next

Schérer retreated to the Adda River and gave up command to Moreau. The next big battle was at Cassano on 27 April.
